What Is LED Light Therapy?

LED light therapy — also called photobiomodulation, or low-level light therapy — uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light to influence how skin cells behave. There is no heat, no UV, and nothing is removed or ablated. Light is simply absorbed by the tissue, and different wavelengths reach different depths and are absorbed by different molecules.

How it works

Cells contain light-sensitive molecules called chromophores. The best studied of these is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria — the part of the cell that produces energy. Red and near-infrared light are absorbed there, and the current understanding is that this absorption temporarily increases cellular energy production and signalling activity.

In skin, that shows up as changes in how fibroblasts behave. Fibroblasts are the cells that make collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its firmness and bounce. Blue light works differently: it is absorbed by porphyrins, compounds produced by the bacteria associated with acne, and that absorption damages the bacteria.

The wavelengths

Wavelength is measured in nanometres (nm), and it determines both the colour of the light and how deep it travels.

  • 415 nm — blue. Stays at the surface. Targets the bacteria associated with breakouts.
  • 633 nm — red. Reaches the dermis, where collagen is produced. Associated with firmness, tone and the appearance of fine lines.
  • 660 nm — red. Similar depth to 633 nm, widely used in panel devices.
  • 830 nm — near-infrared. Invisible to the eye and travels deepest. Studied for tissue recovery and inflammation.
  • 850 nm — near-infrared. The deepest-reaching wavelength in common consumer devices. Reaches muscle and joint tissue.

A device that lists a colour but not a wavelength in nanometres is telling you very little. Wavelength, irradiance (how much light energy reaches the skin, measured in mW/cm²) and session length together determine the dose.

What the research supports — and what it doesn't

Photobiomodulation has a substantial published literature, and the strongest evidence sits around wrinkle appearance, skin texture and tone, and mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. Several LED devices hold FDA 510(k) clearance for over-the-counter wrinkle reduction.

It is worth being precise about what that means. A 510(k) clearance says a device has been shown to be substantially equivalent to an existing legally marketed device for a specific stated purpose. It is not the same as FDA approval, and it does not mean the FDA has endorsed every claim a seller makes. Clearances are device-specific and publicly searchable.

Equally, LED therapy is not a substitute for prescription treatment. It will not resolve severe or cystic acne, it does not replace a dermatologist, and results are gradual rather than dramatic.

What to expect

Light therapy is cumulative. Most people notice changes in brightness and tone first, typically somewhere between the second and fourth week of consistent use. Changes related to firmness and fine lines are slower, because collagen turnover takes months rather than weeks.

Typical home use is a 10 to 15 minute session, three to five times a week. More is not better — the relationship between dose and response is not linear, and longer sessions do not accelerate results.

Safety

LED therapy does not use UV light, so it carries none of the DNA-damage risk associated with tanning or sun exposure. It is generally well tolerated. Some sensible cautions:

  • If you take medication that causes photosensitivity — certain antibiotics, retinoids, or St John's wort among others — check with your prescriber first.
  • If you have a history of light-triggered conditions such as lupus or porphyria, or an active skin condition you are being treated for, speak to your doctor before starting.
  • Follow the distance and duration your device specifies. Closer is not automatically better; distance changes the dose.
  • Near-infrared light is invisible, which means you cannot judge output by how bright a device looks.

Masks with a silicone eye surround can be used with the eyes open — the surround shields the eye area. With panels, avoid staring directly into the light.

Choosing a device

Three things separate a serious device from a novelty: the wavelengths are stated in nanometres, the irradiance is stated at a stated distance, and the certifications are named and verifiable. Everything else — colour count, app control, styling — is secondary.
